Your heart matters: Easy ways to boost cardiovascular health

Every three minutes, someone in the UK dies from cardiovascular disease. That’s one in four people every year — and it can affect anyone, at any age.

This month, take a proactive step towards protecting cardiovascular health.

Here are some simple tips to improve your heart health:

  • Reduce salt: Swap salt for herbs and spices, and taste your food before adding extra salt.
  • Cut down on sugar: Choose low or no-added-sugar options, swap flavoured yoghurt for plain, and reduce sugar in tea or coffee.
  • Add more greens: Include a side salad or extra vegetables with your meals.
  • Limit alcohol: Opt for smaller measures — a half pint, a small glass of wine, or a single rather than a double.
  • Move more: Walk short journeys instead of driving, get off the bus one stop early, and take the stairs instead of the lift.
  • Try meat-free days: Go plant-based at least once a week.
  • Quit smoking: After one year smoke-free, your risk of heart attack is halved compared to a current smoker.

If you’re aged 40–74, you’re also eligible for a free NHS Health Check every five years. These checks help reduce your risk of heart disease and other conditions like high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes.

Our friendly practitioners are available at venues across Norfolk, including Norwich City Football Club Support Hub, Wymondham Hope Church, Alive Lynnsport, local GP surgeries, and more. The check takes just 20–30 minutes and includes blood pressure, cholesterol, and a personal heart disease risk assessment — plus tailored advice to help you stay healthy.
