Reassurance and positive steps for the future – John’s story
30 Sep 2026
John decided to book an NHS Health Check after knowing he was due one and hearing about a friend’s recent experience. Having experienced raised blood pressure in the past, alongside a family history of hypertension, he wanted a clearer understanding of his health and some reassurance. Although John already had an active lifestyle, a generally balanced diet, drank minimal alcohol and did not smoke, he was conscious that stress and anxiety could be affecting his blood pressure.
“I hadn’t seen a GP in years and wanted some reassurance about my health. I’d had raised blood pressure in the past and both of my parents have hypertension, so it was something I was conscious of. I also experience anxiety and stress, which I knew could potentially be having an impact.”
Norfolk NHS Health Checks offer an opportunity to pause and take stock of your health, even if you feel fit and well. By looking at factors including blood pressure and other indicators of cardiovascular health, the check can provide reassurance while highlighting areas where small lifestyle changes or further support may be beneficial.
“After my Health Check, I felt relieved that I’d made the appointment. I now know there will be follow-up with my GP regarding my blood pressure, and the appointment also made me think more carefully about some of my everyday habits.”
“One of the things I realised was the importance of reducing my salt intake even further. Moving forward, I also want to cut down on late-night snacks, increase the amount of cardio exercise I do and start measuring and recording my blood pressure before seeing my GP or nurse.”
“I’m also considering restarting yoga because it has helped me manage my anxiety in the past. Work stress can sometimes be a barrier, but I want to stay focused on my goals and regularly monitor my blood pressure so I can keep on top of my health.”
“My advice to anyone who might be reluctant to have an NHS Health Check is to make the appointment. It only takes around 20 minutes and can provide a lot of reassurance about those niggling thoughts you might have about your health, especially if you haven’t seen your GP for a long time. For me, it was well worth it for the peace of mind.”
“Overall, I’m really glad I went for my NHS Health Check. It gave me reassurance, helped me identify areas I can work on and encouraged me to take practical steps to keep a closer eye on my health going forward.”
